Christmas Gherkins and the International Language of Food!

Christmas Gherkins and the International Language of Food!

You may have heard the phrase ‘The international language of love but at Christmas time it seems that it is more likely to be the international language of food!

At City Legal Translations, we like to find an excuse to try different foods from around the world and because we employ legal translators from many countries, we are sent things from time to time for us to ‘enjoy”. The oddest food that we have tried in our office, on the run-up to Christmas, is pickled fish because its scales look like coins and it swims in schools – this, supposedly represents abundance, or so we were led to believe by our Swedish translator! Eating this food will bring us luck we were assured. Well, we seem to be doing okay, so maybe she was right!

Christmas is a time when we bring together some of the strangest combinations of food from around the world on one large, belly-busting plate. It is the only time in the year when we choose to eat a week’s worth of food in one day! It is the only time of the year when, for some bizarre reason, some German families hide a gherkin ornament in their Christmas tree!

As our world seems to shrink in size, our supermarkets expand under the weight of German Christollen, French bûche de noël (yule log), Italian Panettone, German Glühwein, figs from Israel, as well as British turkey and Christmas pudding.

Then there are the other more obscure Christmas foods including fried chicken from China, spicy hot chocolate from Peru, and radishes (yes, radishes!) from Mexico.

Over the festive season, we will celebrate Christmas with other countries. As one large, international family, our Christmases are intertwined with food and customs from around the world, adopted by us, and soon become part of our own tradition.

On behalf of everyone here at City Legal Translations, we would like to wish all our clients, suppliers, and friends a peaceful and Merry Christmas.
